We all met in our music class-taught by a rather maverick teacher who was very honest about why he became a teacher and left many great music gigs behind (he had to raise his daughter alone since his wife died, a very good reason). She lived in Silver Lake-a district next door to Hollywood. She and I were poor-unlike Golden Boy and his friends-and sometimes it was so glaring and apparent. This feeling of "not quite measuring up" made us more college bound than Golden Boy and the rest. We did not have everything handed to us. She "caught the show biz bug" and took many courses in Drama, stage plays, and Psychology. To support herself, she worked on the fringe of Hollywood around the clubs as a cocktail waitress. There she met up with the darkest of Hollywood's new age group of all-the murderer. She got the fame she craved-in death. Then everyone and everything that crawled around Hollywood's edges came out of the closet and tried to claim a part of her. That's another level of "show biz" that people tend to overlook. Bend over! I remember not too long ago balking at spending $40 to fill my tank. Now it's gone to this. Luckily I fill up half as much as before I started riding bikes again. $5 is actually cheap for gas. In reality it should be more like $8, but subsidies have kept it artificially low. Sadly we've built everything around cheap gas, and now it ain't so cheap so things will break soon. But before we OD on schadenfreude, let's not forget that high gas prices will impact poor working people the most. In L.A. many people simply cannot afford to live near where they work. They'll pay more to drive to work and pay more for basic necessities. It's not really going to make people ride their bikes or take public transit more, at least not yet. Most of us are overfed, impatient, and lazy biatches who would be pretty useless without cars.
